History of the Poconos

Poconos history is complex. The area has its share of spectacular incidents before it became a family holiday destination. When the Dutch settlers came in the area in the 17th century, numerous Native Americans already lived there. But that didn’t stop the Dutch from showing up. After five years, the English arrived and chased the Dutch out. But it would take another hundred years before the first permanent residents, English and German, arrived.

19th Century Poconos Industry

It’s unclear what drew the earliest European inhabitants to the Poconos. But it wasn’t for tourists. And it would be another century before anyone noticed the area’s potential. People began to go to the mountains for respite from the searing summer heat as adjacent New York and Philadelphia expanded and prospered. Tourists attracted to the area due of its proximity. Anthony Dutot opened his first hotel in 1829. Finally, travelers could rest. Soon after, a Pennsylvania power company built a dam on the river, creating Lake Wallenpaupack. They were built by industry and tourism.

Skiers Arrive

High standards of living brought thousands of tourists to the Poconos after WWII. Many of that generation were born in these mountains as honeymooners and skiers year-round. Skiers and vacationers didn’t mind that there were no resorts yet, only cabins and primitive lodges to stay in. But demand creates supply. In the late 1940s, a few resorts quietly debuted, and more followed in the decade that followed. It was done. Tourists claimed the Poconos.

The World’s Honeymoon Capital

The Poconos gained their nickname in the 1960s when heart-shaped baths were placed into one of the resorts there. The publicity kept tourists coming for the rest of the century. And the 21st century brought waterpark resorts. Tourists will never forget Poconos history.

Before tourists discovered the Poconos museums, it was inhabited by Native Americans, Dutch, English, and German people. But once the city discovered it had a world-class summer resort in its backyard, it was all about tourism and entertainment. Make a reservation today!
