The Pocono Mountains Have a Long and Illustrious History.

The history of the Poconos is complicated. Before it became a popular family vacation spot, the area was home to a number of spectacular events. Many Native Americans already lived in the area when the Dutch settlers arrived in the 17th century. However, this did not deter the Dutch from arriving. The English arrived five years later and drove the Dutch out. The first permanent residents, English and German, would not arrive for another hundred years.

What drew the first European settlers to the Poconos is unknown. It wasn’t, however, for tourists. It would take another century for anyone to notice the region’s potential. As neighboring New York and Philadelphia grew and prospered, people began to flock to the mountains for relief from the scorching summer heat. The proximity of the area attracted tourists. In 1829, Anthony Dutot opened his first hotel. Finally, the travelers could take a break. A Pennsylvania power company built a dam on the river soon after, resulting in Lake Wallenpaupack. Industry and tourism helped to build them.

Arrival of Skiers

Following WWII, the Poconos attracted thousands of tourists due to their high standard of living. Many of that generation were born as honeymooners and year-round skiers in these mountains. Skiers and vacationers didn’t mind that there were no resorts available at the time, only cabins and primitive lodges. Demand, on the other hand, generates supply. A few resorts quietly opened in the late 1940s, and more followed in the decade that followed. It was completed. The Poconos were claimed by tourists.

The Honeymoon Capital of the World

When heart-shaped baths were installed in one of the resorts in the 1960s, the Poconos earned their nickname. Tourists continued to flock to the area for the rest of the century as a result of the publicity. Waterpark resorts arrived in the twenty-first century. Tourists will never forget the history of the Poconos.

Native Americans, Dutch, English, and German people lived in the Poconos before tourists discovered the museums. It was all about tourism and entertainment once the city realized it had a world-class summer resort in its backyard. Make a reservation as soon as possible!
